The presentation of the book «Yesterday and today of Churrería La Mañueta. 150 years in images and texts» by Carmela Pérez-Salazar took place at the Nuevo Casino Principal, gathering more than two hundred people. The book includes texts, illustrations, and photographs from customers, friends, and vendors of the Churrería, aiming to complement the work published by Paulina Fernández in 1997 for the 125th anniversary. The event began with kind words from Iñaki Cabasés, a speech by Enrique Maya – Mayor of Pamplona – and interventions by Fermín Elizalde, Ana Elizalde, and Carmela Pérez Salazar. Additionally, Tito and Elías Elizalde were present at the head table but did not speak.
Following the presentation, attendees were invited to enjoy a snack of bread with chorizo and wine at the Churrería while emphasizing that on December 17th, the 150th anniversary of La Churrería’s founding will be celebrated with a special event involving the giants of Pamplona.
The Casino Principal, with 169 years of history, was an ideal venue for the event, although it proved too small for the demand of attendees. Over two hundred people packed the room, and latecomers filled the doorways. Among the attendees were a diverse representation of Pamplona’s social, cultural, and political life, eager to acquire the exclusive book signed by the protagonists.
Carmela Pérez-Salazar explained that the book is divided into four parts: illustrations, texts, photographs, and messages from customers and friends, adding to the commemorative work of Paulina Fernández for the 125th anniversary. «The book already existed, but we wanted to give voice to the people, resulting in a colorful outcome,» Carmela pointed out. She highlighted the participation of both previous writers and new emerging figures who provided their unique perspectives on their relationship with La Churrería. Carmela read excerpts from the book to entice the audience and expressed gratitude to all involved in the project.
Fermín Elizalde praised Carmela Pérez-Salazar’s exhaustive work in archiving and coordinating the publication of the book. He reminisced about his grandparents, his still-healthy elderly mother, and shared some anecdotes from the early days of the business. «The first ten years are tough. Then it gets even harder,» Elizalde quoted his father, mentioning that they will certainly open on December 17th to celebrate the exact anniversary date with a fitting celebration.
The book will be available for purchase at regular distribution points. If you can’t find it, inquire in the old town.
